Glossary of design, standard definitions

Console (or console table): A term originally applied to a bracket that supported cornices or shelves, and later used to describe tables that were attached to a wall and supported by legs in front. Today, this is a description of any type of table used along the wall.

Modern: A term encompassing many styles of furniture that emerged in the second half of the 1900s. Modern products have an updated look, which has become softer and more rounded compared to the sharp lines of modern design.

Continental: a 26-inch pillow, a traditional European-sized pillow.

Continuous coil: A mattress design in which each row of coils consists of one continuous wire.

Contrast roller : the covering or edging of seams covered with a fabric contrasting with or different from the main fabric. It is used for upholstered furniture and fabric accessories such as decorative pillows and curtains.

Corduroy: cotton or viscose velvet with combs (or cords).

Corner block or spacer: A diagonal spacer placed in the corner of the frame structure to ensure strength. It is usually found, for example, on the inner corners of dressers and chests.

Corner cabinet: a triangular-shaped kitchen cabinet for the dining room, adapted for placement in a corner.

Cornice: a cornice that crowns or runs along the top of a souvenir, cage, etc.

texture.

Cottage furniture: a style of everyday furniture that is characterized by coloring and/or decoration. Cottage details often have turned-out legs and very simple lines. The term originated in the Victorian period to refer to the mass production of simplified structures.

Sofa: A term from the 17th and 18th centuries used to refer to a couch. Until recently, it was not used as a term for a sofa or couch.

Table top: A chair with a seat height of 24 inches to 26 inches, unlike a bar stool, which usually has a seat height of 30 inches.

Crackle glaze (or craquelure): A special type of glaze used to create a thin network of cracks.

Credence: An early Italian cabinet that was used to carve meat or display plates. It was the original predecessor of the buffet.

Credence table: A type of small table used to store food before serving; usually a semicircular table with a folding top.

Credenza: Usually a buffet or buffet. In office furniture, credences are horizontal filing cabinets that can also have doors or storage shelves, often placed at a desk.
